‘How has politics become a struggle over who has the right to name themselves as acting out of love? What does it mean to stand for love by standing alongside some others and against other others?’
I explore the use of the heart symbol in the context of social media and the rise of nationalist mindsets in Europe. Beyond its usual conventions — a symbol for love — how does the ♥︎ facilitate a design of trust to conceal breaches of privacy and to fuel stricter border closure policies?
This research is the subject of a book accompanied by a music video: five women are reading a spoken-word piece on the sexualisation of the female body and the idealisation of a nation-state.

Jag utforska användningen av hjärtsymbolen inom ramen för sociala medier och det tilltagande nationalistiska tänkesättet i Europa. Utöver dess vanliga användning – som en symbol för kärlek – hur kan ♥ ︎ främja förtroende för design som kan dölja integritetsintrång och underblåsa en allt strängare gränsövergångarnas politik?
Denna forskning är ämnet för en bok som ackompanjeras av en musikvideo: fem kvinnor framför ett stycke spoken word om sexualiseringen av den kvinnliga kroppen och idealiseringen av en nationalstat.
