The space in between spaces
We are more bodily present in the staircase in comparison to other spaces. We navigate it using all our senses, ascending and descending: when the foot meets the riser, when the hand grips and slides over the railing, listening to the echo of steps and voices, and the transmission when the muscles move us vertically.
Nevertheless, the staircase of today is not articulated. In many apartment buildings, it has been reduced to a transportation area, a solution to a logistical problem when we are transferring between levels.
For my degree project, I have focused on the staircase as a space and its tactility. I begin with the intention to reintroduce an experience using all the senses, not just the visual, in the space. I investigate the role of the staircase in relation to architecture as a gap between spaces and look at the importance of maintaining spaces of liminality, where we can change our state of mind when we have left something to get to something else. How can tactility strengthen the experience of the staircase and reinforce it as a space in architecture?
I trappan är vi mer kroppsligt närvarande än i andra rum. Vi navigerar med kroppens alla sinnen. Uppåt och nedåt. Fotens möte med trappsteget, handens greppande och glidande över räcket. När vi hör ljudet av ekande steg och röster, kraftöverföringen i musklerna när vi rör oss vertikalt.
Ändå har samtidens trappor slutat att gestaltas. I många lägenhetshus har trappan blivit en tom transportsträcka, en lösning på ett logistiskt problem när vi ska förflytta oss mellan plan.
I mitt examensarbete har jag fokuserat på trappan som rum och dess taktilitet. Med utgångspunkt i att återinföra sinnliga upplevelser till rummet utöver den visuella, undersöker jag trappans roll i arkitekturen som ett mellanrum. Nödvändigheten i att bevara rum för liminalitet, där vi kan ändra tempo och sinnestillstånd när vi lämnat något för att komma till något annat. Hur kan taktilitet förstärka upplevelsen i trappan och återta dess roll som ett rum i arkitekturen?
