The system that comprises all life on earth is circular. Nothing is added and nothing disappears; waste becomes nutrition and death contributes to new life. But the human linear approach has led to an accelerating and devastating imbalance in our ecosystem. We have depleted our soils to the extent that we have become dependent on mined nutrients in order to be able to feed the earth’s rapidly increasing population. This design proposal explores the possibility to close the circle by harvesting the nutrients from human urine and return them to the field. The farmer and the townie join together in interdependence as they both become prosumers in a closed food chain.

Det system som inbegriper allt liv på jorden är cirkulärt. Ingenting läggs till och ingenting försvinner, avfall blir till näring och död bidrar till nytt liv. Men människans linjära synsätt har lett till en accelererande och förödande obalans i vårt ekosystem. Vi har utarmat vår matjord så till den grad att vi gjort oss beroende av närsalter brutna ur gruvor för att kunna föda jordens raskt ökande befolkning. Med detta designförslag utforskas möjligheten att sluta cirkeln genom att skörda närsalterna ur människors urin och återföra dem till åkern. Bonden och stadsbon förenas i ett ömsesidigt beroende och blir båda prosumenter i en sluten näringskedja.
