Through animals, humans have come to understand ways of living in this world and simultaneously animals have provided the resources for humans to claim this way of living. Through this progression, humans have lately become detached and lost respect for the origin of their resources. Today, many understand animals through the pets they keep; animals that have been bred to be sympathetic to you. Through this separation, it becomes possible to turn a blind eye to cruelty and the environmental impact that our claim to animals conveys.
For my degree project, I have developed furniture and everyday objects that are positioned in a domestic setting to evoke reflection on the human ruling of the species around us and to encourage thought on how in fact we humans are detached from the nature we depend upon to rule.
With my objects, I want to hit the position between appreciation through recognition and the discomfort through realisation by depicting something uncanny.
Genom djuren har människan kommit att förstå sätt att leva i denna värld och samtidigt har djuren försett människan med resurserna för att göra anspråk på detta leverne. I den utvecklingen har människan kommit att förlorat respekten och blivit frånkopplade från dessa resursers härkomst. Idag förstår många djurriket genom sina husdjur, arter vilka har avlats fram till att vara sympatiska mot dig. Denna separation skapar förutsättningar att blunda för grymhet och den miljöpåverkan våra anspråk på djuren medför.
I mitt examensarbete har jag utvecklat möbler och vardagliga föremål som är placerade i en hemmiljö för att väcka reflektion om människans härskande av arterna omkring oss, och väcka en tanke om hur vi människor faktiskt är separerade från den natur vi blivit beroende av att härska.
Med mina föremål söker jag hitta läget mellan uppskattning genom igenkännande och obehaget av insikt genom att skildra något uncanny.
