It is the commas, periods and spaces in a book that creates its meaning. It is the rests in a piece of music that create rhythm instead of cacophony. In various kinds of ways thinkable, we need a pause between the acts of play, because the interlude creates order out of chaos. If waiting is defined as an interlude, then the part that architecture comes to play is to create a prerequisite for the interlude to exist.
In my degree project, I explore the phenomenon of waiting in connection to spatial design. Waiting belongs to one of the overlooked practices of everyday life, and with the increased mobility of post-modern society, people are becoming more exposed to this. Despite the phenomenon’s centrality, most often the complex social, perceptual and spatial spheres underlying temporary stillness and pause are being disregarded.
I want, in my work, to speculate on a spatial caretaking of waiting, with a belief that waiting is an important part of being human. I base my work on expressions of non-normative behaviour in Arlanda Airport, which emerge when the built environment does not support the needs of people waiting.
Det är i kommatecknen, punkterna och mellanslagen som en bok får sin mening. Det är i pauserna i ett musikstycke som rytm skapas istället för kakafoni. I många olika avseenden behöver människan paus mellan akterna, eftersom detta skapar ordning ur ett kaos. Om väntan definieras som ett interlud, är arkitekturens roll att skapa förutsättningar för interludiet att existera.
I mitt examensarbete undersöker jag fenomenet väntan kopplat till rumslig gestaltning. Att vänta hör till vardagens förbisedda praktiker och med en ökad mobilitet i det postmoderna samhället utsätts människor i allt större utsträckning för väntan. Trots fenomenets centralitet ignoreras ofta de komplexa sociala, perceptuella och rumsliga sfärerna som ligger bakom tillfällig stillhet och paus.
Jag vill i mitt arbete spekulera i ett rumsligt tillvaratagande av väntan, med en tro om att väntan är viktigt för människans varande. Jag utgår ifrån yttringar av icke-normativa beteenden på Arlanda flygplats, vilka uppstår då den byggda miljön inte fångar upp människors behov vid väntan.
